China M Visa — Business Visa Overview
The M visa is the standard Chinese visa for business and trade activities, including attending trade shows, visiting factories, and meeting suppliers. It is typically valid for 30–90 days per entry, with single, double, or multiple entry options.
Required Documents
- Valid passport — at least 6 months validity and 2 blank visa pages.
- Visa application form (V.2013) — completed online via the China Visa Application Service Center (CVASC) website and printed.
- Recent passport photo — 48mm × 33mm, white background, taken within 6 months.
- Invitation letter — from a Chinese trade show organizer, business partner, or authorized inviting entity. Must include your personal details, purpose, dates, and the inviter's official stamp.
- Flight and hotel reservation — round-trip itinerary and accommodation proof.
- Previous Chinese visas — if applicable, provide copies of previous visas.
How to Apply
- Fill out the online application at cova.mfa.gov.cn.
- Book an appointment at your nearest Chinese Visa Application Service Center (CVASC).
- Submit documents in person (some centers accept mail-in or agent submissions).
- Pay the visa fee (varies by nationality and entry type, typically $140–$230 USD).
- Processing time: 4–10 business days. Express service (2–3 days) available for an extra fee.
Getting an Invitation Letter for Trade Shows
Most major Chinese trade fairs provide official invitation letters for international buyers. Register on the fair's official website and request an invitation. The Canton Fair, for example, provides invitation letters to all registered international buyers within 3–5 business days.
Visa-Free Options
144-hour Transit: Citizens of 54 countries can enter Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, and other cities without a visa for up to 144 hours (6 days) if transiting to a third country.
Hainan 30-day: Visa-free access to Hainan province for tourists from 59 countries (business activities may still require a visa).
